Foundations of Psychological and Psychosocial Safety in Australian Adult Education Learning Environments
Issued by River Oak College, RTO 46425. Part of the Safe and Thriving Learning Environments series (MC01).
This digital badge recognises that the earner has demonstrated a foundational understanding of psychological and psychosocial safety, the distinction between them, and how to apply both to Australian adult education learning environments across the VET, Higher Education, Community Education, and Learning and Development sub-sectors.
What the earner can do
- Identify the key factors that shape safety in adult learning environments and explain why psychological and psychosocial safety are foundational to effective practice.
- Explain the concept of psychological safety, its origins, and its defining characteristics.
- Identify the core components of psychosocial safety and explain how organisational and environmental conditions influence learner wellbeing.
- Evaluate the similarities and differences between psychological and psychosocial safety and apply the distinction to realistic scenarios.
- Apply self-reflective practice to evaluate their own behaviours, assumptions, and responses as an adult educator.
How the badge is earned
To earn this badge, learners complete approximately five hours of self-paced structured learning across five modules:
- The landscape of safety in adult learning environments
- Psychological safety unpacked (Schein and Bennis 1965, Edmondson 1999 and 2018, and Clark 2020)
- Psychosocial safety unpacked (Dollard and colleagues, and the Australian regulatory framework across all eight jurisdictions plus the Commonwealth)
- The overlap and divergence of psychological and psychosocial safety
- Self-awareness as adult education practitioners
Learners then achieve 80 percent or higher (20 of 25) on an end-of-microcredential knowledge check of 25 questions covering all five learning outcomes. Question order and answer order are randomised on each attempt, and learners may reattempt the assessment until they reach the pass mark.
